Italy - Factors to watch on Aug. 3

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Friday.

ECONOMY

Markit releases July PMI services (0745 GMT).

ISTAT releases June industrial output data (0800 GMT); June retail sales (0900 GMT) and monthly bulletin on the state of the economy in July (1000 GMT).

Italy’s communications regulator AGCOM said on Thursday it had fined Amazon a total of 300,000 euros ($348,360) for offering postal services without proper authorisation.

Activist fund Elliott has built a stake of around 1 percent in Mediobanca with the intention of increasing it to try and prompt a reform of governance at the bank which is the largest shareholder of insurer Generali, La Repubblica said citing two financial sources. Elliott is flanked by at least one other fund in the move, it said, adding the real aim was Generali.

(*) TELECOM ITALIA

Chairman Fulvio Conti said having one single network infrastructure was in the interest of all and duplication was a waste, according to comments he made in an interview with daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

Conti also said that relations between the board and management at Italy’s biggest phone group were “perfectly fluid” and consistent with the objectives of a three-year business plan unveiled in March.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Thursday met the mayor at the centre of a dispute threatening to delay work on the 4.5 billion euro Trans Adriatic Pipeline but made no commitment about changing the project.

Open Fiber, the broadband company owned by Enel and state lender CDP, is set to sign on Friday a 3.5 billion euro financing package with banks for its infrastructure rollout, Corriere della Sera said. The paper added that CDP and Enel would provide additional support funding of about 950 million euros.

Investment fund Ardian has agreed to pay 850 million euros ($985 million) to create a strategic partnership with Italy’s Gavio group to support the growth of motorway infrastructure companies ASTM-SIAS.

Berenberg raised its rating on the stock to ‘hold’ from ‘sell’. SocGen raised it to ‘buy’ from ‘hold’ and cut its target price to 3 euros from 3.20 euros.

SAFILO

The group on Thursday revised its 2018 targets and said it expected sales to return to grow at a pace of about 2 percent per year in 2019, 2020.

Its CFO said the group was evaluating a cash call for the refinancing of their debt.

The group said on Thursday that the board deemed the price per share of 57 euros adequate in the takeover bid jointly launched by Mediaset and fund F2i.

BANKING SECTOR

Italy’s Cassa Centrale Banca said on Thursday it had received the authorisation from the bank of Italy to create a new cooperative banking group.

BANCA MONTE DEI PASCHI DI SIENA

State-owned lender Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI said on Friday profits and revenues fell in the second quarter though commercial operations and asset quality remained on a positive course. Release followed by conference call (0700 GMT).
