(*) ITALIAN BANKS

The European Central Bank has asked lenders it oversees to put aside more money to fully cover their impaired loans by around 2026, Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Tuesday citing a source.

The so-called SREP requests could increase pressure on some Italian banks including Bper, Banco BPM and UBI BANCA, Il Messaggero reported, adding that Italy’s treasury is studying possible tie-ups to help the troubled lenders.

The European Commission could not give its green light to refunds the Italian government had prepared for retail investors who had lost their money after investing in bailed-in banks, Italy’s treasury warns in a document seen by daily newspapers La Stampa and Il Fatto Quotidiano.

FIAT CHRYSLER

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is reviewing its investment plan for Italy after the country approved taxes on the purchase of larger gasoline and diesel cars, Chief Executive Officer Mike Manley said on Monday. (*) Fiat’s investment plan for Italy is not blocked, Manley said in Detroit talking with four Italian newspapers. He added the carmaker would decide whether and how to modify the plan once the effects of Italian new taxes on the market is clear. (*) Speaking with four Italian newspapers, Fiat Chrysler CEO also said it would be wrong to rule out completely a partnership for the carmaker. He added, however, the group could remain independent as the sale of Magneti Marelli made it stronger.

(*) ASTALDI, SALINI IMPREGILO

Salini is studying now a direct investment in Astaldi, together with state lender CDP and banks, through a capital increase of around 350 million euros for the troubled rival, Il Messaggero said.
