Oct 28 (Reuters) - Level 3 Communications LVLT.O reported a narrower-than-expected third-quarter loss as the company was able to clamp down on costs and realise better communications margins, sending its shares up 2 percent before market.
The company, which sells network capacity to telcos as well as end-users, reported a third-quarter loss of $163 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with $169 million, or 10 cents a share, last year.
Revenue fell slightly to $912 million for the quarter ended Sept 30.
Analysts on average were expecting, the Broomfield, Colorado-based company, to post a loss of 11 cents a share on $909.7 million in revenue, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Communications gross margin increased to 60.6 percent for the third quarter from 59.0 percent last year.
Shares of the compamy, which have lost 22 percent of their value after the company reported weak second-quarter results in late July, closed at $0.94 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Himank Sharma in Bangalore; Editing by Jarshad Kakkrakandy)
