Euro falls vs dollar on plunge in US new home sales

NEW YORK, Jan 29 (Reuters) - The euro tumbled against the dollar on Thursday after data showed sales of new U.S. homes plunged by 14.7 percent last month, underscoring the depth of the U.S. recession and heightened fears for global growth.

The euro fell to around $1.3078 EUR= from about $1.3110 before the data. It last traded at $1.3094, down 0.3 percent. The dollar and yen tend to gain when risk aversion rises as both are seen as safe-haven currencies.

Sterling also pared gains, falling to $1.4252 GBP= from around $1.4285, while the dollar was 0.7 percent lower at 89.70 yen JPY=. (Reporting by Steven C. Johnson; Editing by James Dalgleish)
