UPDATE 1-Norway's Gassco to improve transparency of gas flows, outage reporting

(Adds details, quotes)

OSLO, April 3 (Reuters) - Norway will improve the transparency of its reporting of gas flows to Europe and of outages at its offshore gas fields and onshore processing plants, gas system operator Gassco said on Tuesday.

In addition to real-time information about gas exiting offshore pipelines at receiving terminals in Britain, Germany, Belgium and France, Gassco will provide data on volumes of gas entering its system to indicate how balanced the system is.

Gassco also said it would provide information about unplanned outages earlier than before, and before the impact is known.

“For the first time, the public will get the information at the same time as the gas shippers,” a Gassco spokeswoman said, referring to gas producers such as Statoil and Shell .

“The companies themselves wanted more transparency,” she added.

From Wednesday, Gassco will also start reporting on planned maintenance and unplanned outages affecting gas flows by at least 5 million cubic metres (mcm) per day, down from 20 mcm per day previously.

It will provide information about outages’ impact on available capacity at a specific field or part of the transportation system, in addition to the actual flows, compared with nominations.

“This will give a better overview of the actual consequence, since existing publication of volume impact is based on nominations only,” Gassco said.

Gassco denied that the changes were due to European Union regulations. (Reporting by Nerijus Adomaitis; Editing by Gwladys Fouche and Dale Hudson)
