LONDON, March 27 (Reuters) - Border Reivers rugby team will be disbanded at the end of the season, the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) said on Tuesday.
Several players from the team, who featured in this season’s Heineken Cup pool stage and play in the Magners League, will transfer to the Glasgow Warriors — the SRU’s other professional team.
The SRU said it could not provide long-term support to both teams and so would instead concentrate on one, giving additional funding to the Warriors to strengthen their squad so they can do better in the Magners League and the Heineken Cup.
“It is very regrettable that the Border Reivers is to close but it’s important our pro teams get a chance of success and the only way to do that is to concentrate our resources,” SRU president Andy Irvine said in a statement.
Reivers are bottom of the 11-team Magners League that includes sides from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The only other professional Scottish side are Edinburgh, who are privately owned.
