UPDATE 1-Polish refiner PKN assesses potential losses from tainted Russian oil

(Adds more detail, company comment)

WARSAW, June 11 (Reuters) - Oil refiner PKN Orlen said on Tuesday it was conducting an analysis to estimate the costs and potential losses resulting from the suspension of Russian oil supplies in April due to the contamination of crude transported by the Druzhba pipeline.

Russia halted oil supplies in April after excessive levels of organic chloride were found in the Druzhba pipeline that crosses Belarus and serves customers as far west as Germany.

Supplies of clean oil to Poland were partially restored on Sunday morning.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Kommersant newspaper reported that Russian oil group Rosneft had received claims from Belarus’ Belneftekhim for $155 million and from PKN for another $0.45 million.

Commenting on the amount, a PKN spokeswoman said that the refiner had already been paid penalties resulting from its delivery contracts with suppliers for not having received crude oil. She also said the company had not yet presented its full claims related to the deliveries of contaminated oil and the suspension of supplies, such as extra costs related to processing the tainted oil.

“Contractual penalties for not delivering crude should not be confused with compensations related to all consequences related to the contamination,” the spokeswoman said.

“We are analysing the situation and we present our claims soon,” she also said.

Russia’s Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin said on Monday that compensation for the tainted Russian oil would be decided company by company. (Reporting by Agnieszka Barteczko Editing by Edmund Blair and Jane Merriman)
