RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 2 (Reuters) - A last-minute Leandro Carvalho goal handed Ceara an unexpected 1-0 win over Flamengo in the early Serie A game in Brazil on Sunday.
Playing in front of over 61,000 fans at the Maracana, Flamengo dominated the second half, with Lucas Paqueta, the 21-year old attacking midfielder who will join the Brazil squad for the first time this week, having at least five decent opportunities to score.
However, the home side were left to rue a number of missed chances when Carvalho’s shot from 30 meters out bounced in front of the keeper and went in. The result secured three vital points for the team that are second bottom in the league.
Flamengo remain in third place with 41 points from 22 games, four points adrift of leaders Sao Paulo who have a game in hand. Second-placed Internacional are on 42. (Reporting by Andrew Downie, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
