(Corrects Deyverson’s goal tally in second para)
SAO PAULO, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Palmeiras moved a small step closer to the Brazilian league title on Sunday when two goals from on-form striker Deyverson gave them a 2-0 win over challengers Gremio.
Deyverson’s goals, his third and fourth in his last five league matches, take the Sao Paulo side three points clear at the top of the Serie A table from Internacional, who beat fourth-place Sao Paulo 3-1.
Gremio are in fifth with nine games remaining, a point behind Sao Paulo. Flamengo sit in fourth, four points off the lead.
Deyverson’s first goal seven minutes into the match was a terrific near-post volley that rocketed into the roof of the net from close in.
The second came 33 minutes into the second half when he got on the end of a long punt upfield and then beat the last man before firing home into the top corner of the net. (Reporting by Andrew Downie; editing by Clare Fallon)
