Soccer-Two-time Asian champion Choi joins Dalian

HONG KONG, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Two-time Asian Champions League-winning coach Choi Kang-hee has been unveiled as the new man at the helm of Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifan, the club announced on Monday.

Choi, who guided South Korea’s Jeonbuk Motors to the continental club title in 2006 and 2016 as well as to six domestic league titles, replaces Bernd Schuster in the role.

The German took over five games into the 2018 season and steered the club to safety after a poor opening to their first campaign in the top flight since 2014 following promotion from China League One.

Choi left Jeonbuk at the end of last season having won a sixth Korean league title and initially signed up with CSL side Tianjin Quanjian.

But the withdrawal of the Quanjian Group from the club’s ownership in December saw the former South Korea national team coach annul his contract with Tianjin, leaving him free to take over at Dalian.

Dalian made headlines ahead of last season by signing Yannick Carrasco and Nicolas Gaitan from Atletico Madrid, but despite the new arrivals they were rooted to the bottom of the standings after the opening five games.

Coach Ma Lin was fired and replaced by Schuster, with the German eventually guiding the club to an 11th place finish in the 16-team division. (Editing by Sudipto Ganguly)
