Soccer-Liverpool complete Voronin deal as Cisse and Zenden leave

LONDON, July 6 (Reuters) - Liverpool completed the signing of Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin on Friday on a busy day of transfer activity at Anfield which saw Djibril Cisse and Boudewijn Zenden leave the club.

Liverpool announced Voronin’s impending arrival in February but he only officially joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday after leaving there as a free agent.

In an interview on the club’s Web site, www.liverpoolfc.tv, the club’s new No.10 said: ”After being in Germany for 12 years I felt it was time for a change and then even more so when the offer came in from Liverpool.

He added: “You can’t resist an offer like that. The task in front of Liverpool at the start of every season is to win trophies and I want to be part of that.”

Voronin will link up in attack with 23-year-old Spaniard Fernando Torres, who joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid for a club record fee of 36 million euros ($49 million) on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Cisse, who was Liverpool’s previous record signing when he joined the club for 14 million pounds ($28 million) in 2004, completed his permanent transfer to Olympique Marseille after spending last season on loan there.

Dutch winger Zenden also left Liverpool for Marseille on a free transfer after two years at Anfield.

Former Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler, who left the club at the end of the season, has meanwhile been linked with a move to second division Cardiff City.
