Soccer-Viktoria Berlin win 1894 German final -- 113 years late

BERLIN, July 28 (Reuters) - Viktoria Berlin won the 1894 German championship on Saturday — delayed by 113 years because their opponents Hanau could not afford to travel the 400 kilometres at the time to play in Berlin for the final.

The two clubs, who have long since played in the regional, amateur divisions, played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday after Viktoria won the first leg 3-0 in Hanau last week.

In 1894, Viktoria had been declared champions by default, but that lead to complaints that their victory was unfair.

The President of the German Football Federation (DFB), Theo Zwanziger, had enthusiastically supported the idea of playing the 1894 final and heavy leather balls, similar to those typical of the late 19th century were used for the two games.
