PREVIEW-Soccer-Cup a mere distraction for Milan clubs

MILAN, Dec 17 (Reuters) - The much-maligned Italian Cup could take some more punishment this week with newly crown World Club champions AC Milan and Serie A leaders Inter likely to field weakened sides ahead of Sunday’s league derby.

Inter, seven points clear in Serie A, visit Reggina in their last 16 first leg on Wednesday. An already long injury list will hamper Roberto Mancini’s ability to rotate but he will be keen to avoid any further knocks for the big clash at the weekend.

European champions Milan, who beat Boca Juniors 4-2 in the Club World Cup final in Japan on Sunday, host Catania on Thursday with the Italian Cup paling into comparison with recent successes.

Sunday’s league match against Inter is all the more important to Milan given they have not won at home in the league this term. Sunday counts as an Inter home game meaning Milan can attend the San Siro as visitors and not worry about the hoodoo.

The Italian Cup has also suffered from the last 16 first legs being spread out across December mainly because of Champions League commitments.

Juventus lost 2-1 at Empoli two weeks ago while Fiorentina drew 1-1 at Serie B Ascoli last week when Cagliari put their league troubles behind them with a 1-0 home win over Sampdoria.

The remaining first legs take place on Wednesday with holders AS Roma visiting Torino for the second time this week. Luciano Spalletti’s side, without the injured Francesco Totti, were lucky to get away with a 0-0 draw in Sunday’s league clash.

Lazio also entertain Napoli and Udinese host Palermo, with the game in Udine moved to a 1400 GMT kickoff so fans can do Christmas shopping in the evening.

The second legs are scheduled for Jan. 16. (Editing by John O’Brien)
