VALENCIA, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Athletic Bilbao’s results crisis worsened with a 3-0 defeat at Levante on Monday which leaves the Basque club three points from the safety zone as the pressure mounts on coach Eduardo Berizzo.
Levante defender Chema Rodriguez turned in a free kick from Ruben Rochina to break the deadlock in added time of a first half in which Athletic had the better chances.
Jose Campana doubled the lead in the 59th on the rebound while striker Roger Marti struck 10 minutes later to further humiliate the visitors, who had 20-year-old Peru Nolaskoain sent off for a reckless challenge on Jose Luis Morales.
Bilbao are one of three teams, along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, never to have been relegated from Spain’s top flight but their status is under serious threat.
They have not won a league game since the opening day of the season and are stuck in the relegation zone on 11 points after 14 games, three points behind 17th-placed Villarreal.
Levante moved up to sixth in the standings on 21 points, seven behind leaders Barcelona. (Reporting by Richard Martin; editing by Ken Ferris)
