The Chicago Fire announced the signing of Argentinian Nicolas Del Grecco on Thursday.
The defender is under contract through the 2019 season with club options for 2020 and 2021, and he comes to the Fire from Honduran side Club Deportivo Olimpia.
The Fire, in need of a player to shore up their sagging defense, will add Del Grecco to the roster once he receives his international transfer certificate and P1 visa. Financial terms of the contract were not announced.
Since joining Olimpia in January, the 6-foot-1 Del Grecco played in 12 league matches in the Honduran first division. He also appeared in a CONCACAF Champions League match in March against the New York Red Bulls.
He rescinded his contract in Honduras after Olimpia fired coach Carlos Restrepo and hired Nahun Espinoza to replace him. Del Grecco lost his starting spot with the change.
“Halfway through the tournament, Restrepo, the coach that brought me, leaves. A legendary Honduran coach who had already coached the team comes in and doesn’t need me and that’s why I left,” Del Grecco told Honduran publication Diez earlier this month.
Del Grecco, 24, was the captain of Club Deportivo Libertad de Sunchales in the Argentine third division before moving on to Olimpia.
