The Columbus Crew and FC Dallas played to a scoreless tie at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday.
Columbus (12-8-8, 44 points) is 4-1-2 in the past seven games. Dallas (14-6-8, 50 points) has lost once at home with a 9-1-5 record.
Zack Steffen had two saves for his ninth shutout for the Crew, which has played four 0-0 matches on the road this season.
Jesse Gonzalez of Dallas had to make only one save despite Columbus having a 16-10 shot advantage.
Both teams entered the match confident in their abilities to score goals. Dallas had seven in the previous two games. Columbus scored 11 times in its prior six matches.
However, neither team generated much offense in the first half with one shot on goal apiece among the 15 attempted, eight by Columbus.
The Crew’s Federico Higuain had an 18-yard strike straight at Gonzalez in the 27th minute. Santiago Mosquera, trying for his fourth goal in the past three Dallas games, targeted the upper right corner on a free kick in the 32nd minute but Steffen was there to step in front of the shot.
It was more of the same sluggish attack after the break with Dallas waiting until the 80th minute for its first shot of second half.
Columbus wasn’t much better but almost broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when Higuain’s half volley from a Justin Meram service bounced across the goalmouth and Gyasi Zardes, who leads the Crew with 15 goals, was unable to get on the end of it.
The Crew plays at Portland on Wednesday. Dallas is on the road against Vancouver on Sept. 23.
