Goalie Clark leads D.C. United to first win of season

Steve Clark made five saves against his former team in his first start of the season, and short-handed D.C. United defeated the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.

D.C. (1-3-2) was winless in its previous nine regular-season games since Sept. 23, 2017.

Columbus (3-3-1), losers of three straight for the first time since May 4-10, 2014, has been shutout in consecutive games.

Ulises Segura scored the game’s only goal in the first minute.

United midfielder Paul Arriola was sent off in the 51st minute for a tackle from behind on Artur. Arriola was originally issued a caution, but it was changed to a red card upon video review.

Clark then went to work. He denied a Pedro Santos header in the 61st minute, stopped a Gyasi Zardes sitting header from the middle of the box in the 66th minute, and a minute later snared a straight-on strike by Harrison Afful.

The final save for Clark came in the 92nd minute when Cristian Martinez put a skimming shot on target from 10 yards.

The match was played at Navy-Marines Corps Memorial Stadium in the last home game for D.C. until opening Audi Field in Washington on July 14. The attendance was 12,396.

Segura scored the first goal of his MLS career just 45 seconds into his fifth match. Arriola sent a service from the right side to the top of the box. The ball took one bounce on the artificial turf, and Segura one-timed a cross-body shot from 18 yards for D.C.’s lone shot on goal for the match.

The Crew led in shots (24-5) and crosses (46-6), but D.C. had 40 of the 44 clearances.

Columbus hosts New England on April 21. D.C. next plays at Philadelphia on April 28.
