NYCFC's Herrera out for season after ankle surgery

New York City FC midfielder Yangel Herrera will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing arthroscopic ankle surgery, the club announced Thursday.

Herrera is expected to make a full recovery.

Herrera was injured in NYCFC’s 3-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo on May 25 and has missed the past two games. The 20-year-old had three assists in 13 games (12 starts) this season.

Herrera, a Venezuelan international on loan from sibling club Manchester City, played his first season with NYCFC last year, totaling a goal and two assists in 18 games (14 starts).

NYCFC is second in the Eastern Conference standings with 27 points, behind only Atlanta United (29 points).
