New York City FC defender Ronald Matarrita will miss the World Cup and at least two MLS matches after injuring his right hamstring on Thursday in a training session with the Costa Rica national team in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Matarrita was discovered to have suffered a Grade 1 strain after undergoing an MRI exam and ultrasound.
“Ronald Matarrita had been presenting, a few days ago, discomfort on the back of his right thigh, was treated with physical therapy treatment, readjustment and medication, but during training yesterday (the) player tells us that there is no improvement in his discomfort,” Costa Rica team doctor Alejandro Ramirez said in a press release.
Matarrita has been dealing with occasional hamstring issues for several months.
Costa Rica replaced him on the roster with defender Kenner Gutierrez.
The 23-year-old Matarrita has one goal and one assist in nine games (four starts) for NYCFC this season. In three MLS seasons, he has two goals and nine assists in 46 games (35 starts).
