Torrent, NYCFC looking for more success as streaking Montreal visits

New York City FC will try to move closer to the top spot in the Eastern Conference when they host streaking Montreal at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

A dramatic 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday moved NYCFC (10-4-4, 34 points) into second place, six points behind Atlanta United with two games in hand. NYCFC will make up one of those versus Montreal (8-11-0, 24 points), which has won four straight.

NYCFC are 2-1-0 under coach Domenec Torrent since he replaced Patrick Vieira, who last month joined French club Nice as its coach.

The change to Torrent and his staff has gone well.

“The team philosophy is the same,” forward Maximiliano Moralez said. “Surely they’ll have new ideas and new changes we’ll try to implement. Other than that, we have to continue playing well and improve game-after-game and do what our new coach asks of us.”

New York City has taken advantage of the undersized pitch at Yankee Stadium for an 8-0-1 home record, including Moralez scoring in the 85th minute to defeat the Red Bulls.

NYCFC midfielder David Villa is questionable with a knee injury. He did not play Sunday.

Montreal wasn’t in the postseason picture a month ago but moved into the sixth and final spot in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win over Colorado on Saturday for its fifth victory in six games.

“The fact that we’re piling up games with the same lineup, with only a few changes, really helps a lot,” midfielder Samuel Piette said. “We’re finding each other well and we’re more united than ever. We all work towards the same objective, and we’re synchronized to get the result.”

Montreal has not won five straight matches since the end of the 2015 season and the first two games in 2016.
