Crew reacquire Meram from Orlando City

The Columbus Crew reacquired midfielder Justin Meram from Orlando City just six-plus months after dealing him away, the teams announced Friday.

The Crew are sending $750,000 in Targeted Allocation Money and a 2019 international slot in exchange for the 29-year-old Meram, who requested Columbus trade him prior to the January deal with Orlando City.

Meram didn’t mix well with Orlando City as he had just one goal and three assists in 17 games (14 starts). He scored a career-best 13 goals and added seven assists last season for Columbus.

“We are pleased to welcome Justin back to Crew SC,” Columbus Sporting Director and head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a team statement. “He has proven to be one of the league’s elite attacking players over the past few years as he helped establish our club’s style of play and define our wide attacking midfield profile. He complements our current attacking corps and understands our environment, so we are confident he will adapt quickly and make our team better as we aim to qualify for the postseason.

“He has already left a distinct mark in our club’s history and we look forward to the next chapter.”

Meram recorded 37 goals and 33 assists in 188 games (134 starts) with Columbus.

But he struggled in his environment and last played in a match for Orlando City on July 7. He didn’t make the trip when Orlando City visited Columbus on July 21.
