Dockal's late goal leads Union past D.C. United

Borek Dockal, C.J. Sapong and Ilsinho each scored one goal, and the host Philadelphia Union defeated D.C. United 3-2 Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium.

The Union won for just the second time this season.

Zoltan Stieber and Darren Mattocks scored one goal apiece for struggling D.C. United, who has won only once in seven games this season. They registered a 1-0 win against the Columbus Crew in their last game but couldn’t maintain the momentum on the road against the Union.

In the 50th minute, Steve Birnbaum appeared to be taken down in the box by Sapong but no call was made by the officials.

One minute later, the Union had a good opportunity to take the lead when Dockal found Haris Medunjanin open in the box. Medunjanin’s left-footed shot, however, went wide.

The Union went ahead 2-1 in the 60th minute when Sapong received a header by Alejandro Bedoya and then headed the ball past United goalkeeper Steve Clark.

United were being outplayed but managed to equalize at 2 in the 70th minute when Mattocks finished a cross with a jumping kick into the corner of the net.

Then in the 72nd minute, the Union responded quickly and retook the lead 3-2 on a rocket by Dockal from about 15 yards out.

D.C. struck first in the seventh minute when Stieber broke free on the wing and finished a pass by Luciano Acosta for a 1-0 advantage. It was Stieber’s first goal of the season and the second of his career.

Ilsinho had a pair of good scoring chances for the Union in the 11th and 14th minutes. In the 11th minute, Ilsinho fired a shot high and in the 14th, he had a bit of a tough angle though he managed a strong shot which was saved by Clark.

The Philadelphia pressure paid off in the 37th minute when Ilsinho scored off an assist from Keegan Rosenberry to tie the game at 1.

United’s defense was strong in the final couple of minutes of the first half in keeping the game tied at 1 at halftime.
