The Philadelphia Union announced the signing of Cameroonian defender Olivier Mbaizo from the club’s United Soccer League affiliate, Bethlehem Steel FC, on Tuesday.
Mbaizo will occupy an international roster spot for Philadelphia.
“Olivier trained with the Union first team throughout our preseason, and it became clear that he has the potential to immediately contribute at the MLS level,” said Union sporting director Earnie Stewart in a statement. “He has earned this quick ascension to our first team through his play in preseason, and we look forward to further integrating him and assisting with his development.”
Mbaizo, 20, played for Rainbow FC and Union Douala in his native Cameroon before joining Bethlehem in January. He made 10 appearances as a defender with Rainbow last season, registering four assists.
Mbaizo recently earned a call-up to train with the Cameroonian senior national team after stints with their U-17 and U-20 squads.
