Burke's first career goal helps Union beat Impact

Cory Burke scored his first career goal in Major League Soccer to lead the Philadelphia Union past the Montreal Impact, 2-0, Saturday at Stade Saputo.

Haris Medunjanin added a late goal and the Union won for the first time on the road since last May, snapping a 16-game winless skid.

Philadelphia was shut out in its last two road games at Toronto FC and the Columbus Crew.

Montreal had been 2-1-0 at home before this loss.

In the sixth minute, Ignacio Piatti appeared to be taken down in the box by Philadelphia’s Alejandro Bedoya, but the referee didn’t whistle for a penalty kick. Piatti also had a strong scoring chance in the 13th minute and ripped the shot just wide on the far side.

Philadelphia defender Raymon Gaddis nearly scored his first career MLS goal in the 15th minute as his shot was stopped by a diving Evan Bush.

Raheem Edwards fired a strike from the top of the box in the 36th minute, but Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake made the save.

In the 43rd minute, Burke registered his first-ever goal, taking a pass from Gaddis and sending a low-lining shot past Bush for a 1-0 lead. It was only the second time all season that the Union scored first.

Montreal’s Anthony Jackson-Hamel almost equalized in the 50th minute as his strike from the corner of the box was knocked away by Blake.

Burke was sent off with a straight red card in the 59th minute for a reckless tackle against Montreal’s Samuel Piette. The Union were forced to play with 10 men the rest of the game.

Daniel Lovitz took down Philadelphia’s Fafa Picault and was issued a yellow card. But the play was reviewable and Lovitz was later given a red card and ejected in the 70th minute for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, leaving both teams with 10 men.

The Impact were awarded a corner kick in the 86th minute, but Blake came out of the goal and snared the ball out of the air.
