Philadelphia Union star forward CJ Sapong reached agreement on a contract through the 2019 season with a club option for 2020, the team announced on Wednesday.
Sapong, 29, set a franchise single-season mark with 16 goals last season.
“We are pleased to complete this agreement with CJ, a critical part of the spine of our team,” Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a press release. “He fits perfectly in our system with his nose for goal and his hold-up play.
“We’d like to thank him for his hard work and commitment to the Philadelphia Union and we look forward to working with him for years to come.”
Sapong made $300,000 last season. Terms on his new team weren’t immediately available.
Sapong has 33 goals and 12 assists in 92 games with the Union since joining the team for the 2015 season. He has one goal and one assist this season.
Overall, Sapong has 53 goals and 21 assists in 202 MLS games, including his tenure with Sporting Kansas City (2011-14).
