High-powered Atlanta a mismatch for struggling Seattle

It has been the type of season for Atlanta United where it doesn’t matter where they play or who their opponents are — they are more than likely going to win and score multiple goals in doing so.

Atlanta (12-4-4, 40 points) ended its one-week road trip with a 2-0 win over Philadelphia. The win left the team with not only the top record in the Eastern Conference, but also the best mark in all of MLS.

Now it’s time for home cooking, as Atlanta will play host to Seattle (4-9-4, 16 points) Sunday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

In the win over Philly, Atlanta got a league-leading 18th goal of the season from Josef Martinez for one of its tallies. Hector Villalba put home the other goal, as Atlanta leads MLS with 42 goals.

Martinez continues his incredible run since the Venezuelan joined the league last season, now posting 37 goals in his 37 starts. His five hat tricks are tied for the all-time MLS record. Miguel Almiron has eight goals and nine assists for Atlanta.

As good as the offense has been, the defense has been equally spectacular. The team has posted only one loss in its last eight games, allowing multiple goals in one of those contests. Atlanta is tied for the fifth-fewest goals allowed in MLS with 23. Goalie Brad Guzan is tied for fourth in shutouts in the league with six.

While Atlanta is soaring, Seattle is sinking, standing 10th in the Western Conference, 10 points out of the final playoff spot.

Will Bruin has five goals to lead Seattle, but no other player on the team has more than one goal.

Seattle’s 15 goals on the season are the league low; no other team has less than 22 goals.
