With the 2018 season set to kick off, Sporting Kansas City announced contract extensions for goalkeeper Tim Melia, defender Ike Opara and forward Daniel Salloi on Tuesday.
Melia’s new deal runs through 2020, while Opara and Salloi are both now signed through 2019 with options for 2020. Salloi has a 2021 option as well.
Melia, 31, led MLS in goals-against average (0.78), save percentage (78.4) and penalty-kick saves (three) last season, en route to Goalkeeper of the Year MLS Best XI honors. Entering his fourth season as Sporting KC’s starter, he ranks third in MLS history with a 1.12 career goals-against average (minimum 5,000 minutes played).
The 29-year-old Opara also earned MLS Best XI honors in 2017 while claiming the Defender of the Year award. He set career highs in starts (30) and minutes played (2,700) while scoring four goals and leading a defense that allowed just 29 regular-season goals.
Salloi, 21, scored six goals in 27 appearances last season, with three coming in the US Open Cup, including the game-winner in the final.
Sporting KC kicks off its season Sunday at home against New York City FC.
