Leading MLS in goals while playing for the highest-scoring team in the league — a team which also sits atop the Western Conference — seems like a good way to earn player of the month honors.
It worked for Felipe Gutiérrez.
The Sporting Kansas City midfielder on Friday was named the MLS Player of the Month for March.
The 27-year-old designated player leads the league with five goals in five games, the main weapon in an arsenal that has accounted for 10 goals, tied for the most in MLS. Sporting KC is tied for the Western Conference lead with 10 points and is unbeaten in four straight. Not coincidentally, Gutiérrez has scored in four straight.
Sporting KC travels to Los Angeles for a game Sunday against the Galaxy, who sit just three points back in the West.
