Gordon's late goal gives Chicago tie with Toronto FC

Alan Gordon scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time as the Chicago Fire rallied for a 2-2 tie with defending MLS champion Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field in Toronto.

Bastian Schweinsteiger had a goal and also assisted on Gordon’s game-tying goal and Richard Sanchez had two saves for Chicago, which snapped a six-game losing streak to Toronto.

Victor Vazquez had a goal and an assist and Jonathan Osorio also scored for Toronto, which has just five points in seven matches. Alexander Bono finished with six saves.

Bono stopped Gordon’s original diving header attempt but the Fire forward knocked in the rebound with his back heel while rolling on the ground for his first goal of the season.

Toronto showed no hangover following a devastating loss on penalty kicks in the CONCACAF Champions League final on Wednesday night at Chivas de Guadalajara, racing out to a 2-0 lead in the first 22 minutes.

A wide-open Osorio scored the first goal at the eight-minute mark, tapping in a crossing pass from Sebastian Giovinco into the left side of the net for his first goal of the season.

Giovinco appeared to increase Toronto’s lead to 2-0 just three minutes later when he converted a Nicholas Hasler pass from about 15 yards in the middle of the box but the goal was disallowed after it was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which ruled Hasler was offside before making the pass.

Eleven minutes later, Vazquez did make it 2-0 when he gathered a long, looping pass from Michael Bradley on the right side of the box and chipped in a shot over Sanchez for his first goal of the season.

Bono had five saves in the first half, including one on a point-blank attempt by forward Elliot Collier from the left side of the goal and another on a penalty kick by Schweinsteiger in the 38th minute, diving to the left side of the goal to deflect the right-footed attempt away.

Schweinsteiger then put the Fire on the board in the 69th minute when he headed in a pass from the top of the box by Kevin Ellis on a corner kick by Diego Campos setting the stage for Gordon’s highlight-reel game-tying goal.
