Duenas, Tigres top Toronto in Campeones Cup

Jesus Duenas and Tigres U.A.N.L. of Liga MX silenced the home crowd at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday, claiming a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC in the inaugural Campeones Cup.

Duenas tallied twice for Tigres, first after getting behind the defense on a run from the wing in the 36th minute, and again with a rocket from outside the box in the 64th minute, striking a bouncing ball from a corner kick into the bottom left corner. Two minutes after Duenas’ second goal, Toronto defender Eriq Zavaleta made it 3-0 by accidentally deflecting a pass into his own net.

Toronto got on the board late with a penalty kick converted by Lucas Janson in the 86th minute.

The event was announced in March as an annual battle between the most recent champions of the North America’s top soccer leagues. Toronto FC won the 2017 MLS Cup last December, and Tigres won Liga MX’s Campeones de Campeones in July.
