Kendall Waston’s goal on a header in the fourth minute of second-half added time gave the host Vancouver Whitecaps a dramatic 2-2 tie with the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer action Friday night.
The tally came after Mauro Manotas had given the Dynamo a 2-1 lead and in the 89th minute — and just moments before the final whistle, capping a frantic finish to an entertaining game before a crowd of 18,818 at B.C. Place Stadium.
Waston put the ball home after Kei Kamara headed Felipe’s free kick toward him.
Manotas sent the Dynamo ahead with a straight-on shot from inside the Vancouver 18-yard box after the ball bounced fortuitously to him off Whitecaps defenders. The goal came after the Whitecaps had several near misses.
The Whitecaps improved to 4-5-2, but have only one win in their past six games. The Dynamo (3-3-3) has gone without a win in two of its past three games and is now winless in eight all-time games in Vancouver.
Houston’s Tomas Martinez and Vancouver’s Jose Aja exchanged goals in the first half.
Brian Rowe made his first start in goal for Vancouver after No. 1 goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic suffered a sprained knee in practice Thursday. Marinovic is expected to be out two weeks.
Rowe was acquired in December from the Los Angeles Galaxy in a trade for a 2018 second-round draft choice.
The Whitecaps were anxious to score after being shut out in three of their previous four games. The hosts showed more desperation than usual from the get-go, but Houston still dominated possession as the Caps were content to rely on their counterattacking style.
Houston lost Darwin Ceren to an apparent right ankle injury just over 10 minutes into the game. Ceren went down twice within a few moments. The first time, he went off and quickly returned. But the second time, he was quickly replaced by Oscar Boniek Garcia.
The substitution proved to be fortunate, because Garcia helped the Dynamo get on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute. Martinez took a pass from Garcia at the top of the Vancouver box and then put a low shot into the left corner of the net past Rowe.
Aja created a 1-1 tie in the 45th minute as he volleyed in a short pass from Waston after the Whitecaps captain dribbled the ball perilously close to the end line.
