Briefs-Indian athlete takes up coaching after sex test failure

Jan 2 (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world:

Athletics - India’s Santhi Soundarajan, who was stripped of her Asian Games medal after failing a gender test, has swapped competition for coaching to keep her athletic aspirations alive.

Soundarajan lost the women’s 800 metres silver medal she captured in Doha in 2006 and was hospitalised last September following an apparent suicide bid because of the media intrusion following the incident.

However, she recently started her Olympian Sports Academy after joining the regional government as an athletics coach on a two-year contract, the Times of India newspaper reported on Friday. “I’ve stopped training. I’m not returning to the track. I’m happy coaching,” she told the newspaper.

Tennis - Australian tennis great John Newcombe believes Andy Murray is a future world number one and tipped the Scot to win this month’s Australian Open and end Britain’s 73-year wait for a grand slam champion.

“He could be the guy that will step up and win,” the seven-times grand slam winner told reporters. “He got to number four in the world but the way he was playing at the end of the year, you think in 12 months time he’ll be close to number one.”

Cricket - All-rounder Shoaib Malik will remain captain of the Pakistan team as the cricket board is satisfied with his performance, a senior official said.

Board chairman Ejaz Butt told reporters in Karachi that he saw no reason for changing the captain as Malik had been doing a good job.

“We don’t believe that change should be made just for the sake of change,” Butt said of Malik, who is expected to get a one-year extension to his captaincy which expired on Dec. 31. (Editing by John O’Brien)
