Briefs 3-Suspension cuts short Hleb's season with Arsenal

LONDON, April 23 (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world:

Soccer-Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb will miss the rest of the season after he admitted a charge of violent conduct, the English FA said on Wednesday.

The Belarus international, who will serve an automatic three-match ban, escaped punishment at the time for slapping Reading’s Graeme Murty in the face during Arsenal’s 2-0 Premier League win on Saturday, an incident the referee did not see.

He was charged with violent conduct after referee Peter Walton watched video footage of the incident and informed the FA that he would have shown Hleb a red card.

Soccer-Palermo’s Brazilian forward Amauri is likely to sign for Juventus at the end of the season, the Sicilian club’s President Maurizio Zamparini said.

“Amauri has a 90 percent chance of going to Juve,” Zamparini told the ANSA news agency. “The operation has a high chance of being completed, unless Barcelona or Real Madrid move in, which could turn the situation around.”

Tennis - One of Ukraine’s top players, Yulia Vakulenko, has opted to take out Spanish citizenship, the country’s tennis federation said.

“I have lived in Spain for 10 years, as has my family. It was a difficult decision, but I hope you will understand and respect it,” Vakulenko, 41st in the world, said in a letter posted on the federation’s Web site.

Soccer-French-born teenage striker Dominique Malonga has turned down an offer to play international football for Congo, preferring to pursue a chance to play in France’s junior teams.

Congo coach Ivica Todorov told reporters he had contacted the 19-year-old to invite him to join the country’s World Cup qualifying campaign but Malonga said he wanted to concentrate on trying to win international recognition with France. (Editing by Rex Gowar)
