Briefs3-FA investigating claims of racist chanting against Mido

Dec 1 (Reuters) - Sports news in brief from around the world

Soccer - The English Football Association is investigating claims of racist chanting directed at Middlesbrough’s Egyptian striker Mido by Newcastle United fans during Saturday’s Premier League match.

“We’ll work with the clubs and potentially the police to identify those responsible. We would call for individuals found guilty to be banned,” an FA spokesman said.

Mido was also abused by Newcastle fans in the corresponding fixture last season.

Alpine skiing - Spain’s top alpine skier Maria Jose Rienda is not considering retirement, despite tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in the World Cup giant slalom event in Aspen.

The 33-year-old said in a statement the injury was not as bad as one to her right knee that forced her out for more than year, she only returned in January, and was keen on returning to the circuit.

Swimming - Tests on Olympic swimming champion Federica Pellegrini have shown no significant problem after breathing problems forced her to withdraw from a race at the Italian winter championships last week, Italy’s Olympic Committee said.

She will undergo further checks in the next few days to try to discover what caused Friday’s breathing difficulties.
