Arkema evacuates Texas chemical plant amid explosion risk

WASHINGTON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Arkema SA said on Tuesday it was evacuating remaining workers from a chemical plant in southeast Texas damaged by Tropical Storm Harvey amid the risk of an explosion.

The company said in a statement the situation at its Crosby, Texas, plant “has become serious” and it was working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the state of Texas to set up a command post near the site.

“While we do not believe there is any imminent danger, the potential for a chemical reaction leading to a fire and/or explosion within the site confines is real,” the company said.
