NBC crowns "Kings" after pilot impresses

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - NBC has formally picked up a series described as a contemporary take on the David vs. Goliath tale.

“Kings,” which stars Australian actor Christopher Egan and “Deadwood” villain Ian McShane, is set in a besieged metropolis. When David Shepherd (Egan), a brave young soldier, rescues the king’s (McShane) son from enemy territory, he sets events in motion that will finally bring peace. Suddenly, David is thrust into the limelight, earning the affections of women — including the king’s daughter.

It originally was ordered as a two-hour pilot, but NBC decided to proceed with a full series order after executives saw footage from the pilot, which is currently in production.

“We’ve always loved this concept,” said NBC programming chief Ben Silverman, “and after watching the production that’s currently under way — as well as the incredible chemistry of the cast and the amazing world realized by (director) Francis Lawrence and (writer) Michael Green — we want to continue telling the story with a series commitment.”
