Sept 7 (Reuters) - Round-up of day 10 at the U.S. Open championships on Wednesday:
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The way I played... it’s not good enough in my opinion to win this tournament. It’s better I’m out and somebody else gets a chance to do better than me.” - Roger Federer after his loss to Juan Martin del Potro.
FACT OF THE DAY: Madison Keys who beat Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-3 6-3 to make the second major semi-final of her career, had two surgeries on her left wrist at the end of 2016 and returned to competitive action at Indian Wells this year.
STATISTIC OF THE DAY: Four American women will feature in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows for the first time since Tracy Austin, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Barbara Potter entered the final four in 1981.
PERFORMANCE OF THE DAY: Juan Martin del Potro crushed Roger Federer’s hopes of a first meeting with world number one Rafa Nadal at the U.S. Open, with a 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) 6-4 win in two hours and 50 minutes. Del Potro, who denied Federer in the 2009 final, combined power with precision against the Swiss and has a great chance to win his second major.
