(Reuters) - Barclays UK online banking customers were briefly shut out of their accounts on Thursday as the bank suffered its latest technical glitch, but it said service had now been fully restored.

A number of customers took to Twitter to complain they were unable to access their accounts, while Reuters received an error message when it tried to access the lender’s online banking home page.

A Barclays spokesman said the bank was experiencing some technical problems, but later said these had been resolved for all customers.

He declined to say how many customers had been affected.

Barclays’ latest glitch came after an influential committee of members of parliament ordered the lender, alongside rival Royal Bank of Scotland, to explain the source of its last outage and how it planned to compensate customers.

The fault, which occurred in September, hit Barclays online, telephone and branch services and was just one in a number of technical failures that have taken some of Britain’s major lenders offline in recent months.

As big banks close branches and push customers towards digital services, the consequences of outages have become more widespread, interrupting client’s ability to access their accounts or make crucial transactions.

A botched IT migration at mid-sized lender TSB earlier this year plunged the bank into chaos and underscored the damage caused to customers when locked out of their accounts for extended periods.
