MOSCOW (Reuters) - A court in Belarus has ordered opposition politician Maria Kolesnikova to be held in custody until Nov. 8 while facing trial on national security charges, the RIA news agency cited her lawyer as saying on Friday.

Kolesnikova, 38, one of the most prominent leaders of nearly six weeks of anti-government protests, is in custody in Minsk after ripping up her passport earlier this month to thwart an attempt to expel her to Ukraine.

She was charged with calling for “actions aimed at undermining Belarusian national security” on Wednesday, the Investigative Committee said.
