Greek labour unions plan 24-hour anti-austerity strike on May 17

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece’s largest public sector union ADEDY said on Thursday it will stage a 24-hour strike on May 17 against reforms and additional austerity prescribed by the country’s lenders in exchange for bailout loans.

ADEDY said the measures, which Greece plans to legislate in order to conclude a crucial review of its bailout progress, were “unfair and tough”.

An official at private sector union GSEE, Greece’s largest, told Reuters that it is also gearing for a 24-hour walkout on May 17. Its board would confirm the decision next week, the official said.

The date of the strike, aimed to coincide with the parliamentary vote on the measures, could change, ADEDY said.

Athens has agreed to apply more austerity after its 86 billion-euro bailout ends, its third rescue plan since the debt crisis began in 2010. Participation in strikes and street rallies has been low in recent years.
