FACTBOX - Countdown to French 2007 elections

(Reuters) - France’s Constitutional Council said on Monday 12 candidates had qualified to stand in next month’s presidential election.

Here is a timetable counting down to both the presidential vote and the parliamentary election that follows it.

April 9-20 - Official campaign period.

April 21 - First round presidential voting starts in France’s overseas territories and departments Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and French Polynesia.

April 22 - First round of voting on mainland France, on the Indian Ocean islands of Reunion and Mayotte and in New Caledonia. Exit polls due at 8.00 p.m. (6 p.m. British time).

May 5 - Second round of voting in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and French Polynesia.

May 6 - Second round of voting on mainland France, Reunion, Mayotte and in New Caledonia. Exit polls due at 8.00 p.m. (1800

GMT).

May 17 - End of President Jacques Chirac’s mandate.

June 10 - First round of voting in parliamentary election.

June 17 - Second round of voting in parliamentary election.

June 19 - End of legislature of outgoing parliament.
