New Approach in Epsom Derby triumph

LONDON (Reuters) - New Approach, trained in Ireland by Jim Bolger and ridden by Kevin Manning, galloped to an exciting triumph in the Epsom Derby on Saturday at odds of 5-1.

Second place in the field of 16 went to Tartan Bearer (6-1), the mount of Ryan Moore with the 7-2 favourite Casual Conquest, partnered by Pat Smullen, in third.

It was a first victory in the classic race for both Bolger and Manning. The winning distances were half a length and four and half lengths.

New Approach twice missed out on classic success earlier this season having finished second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Irish equivalent at the Curragh.
