Brussels wants dialogue with Hungary on concerns over rights, democracy

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Hungary needs to assuage the European Union’s serious concerns that Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s policies run counter to the bloc’s values on rights and democracy, the EU executive’s deputy head said on Wednesday.

“Taken cumulatively, the overall situation in Hungary is a cause of concern for the Commission,” said First Vice-President Frans Timmermans, adding that the European Commission had agreed to start “a political dialogue” with the Hungarian authorities.
