Iraq's Umm Qasr port remains closed, operations halted amid Basra protests

BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq’s main seaport Umm Qasr remained closed on Friday, after several days of violent protests in nearby Basra, local officials and security sources said.

All operations have been halted since Thursday, after protesters blocked the entrance to the port overnight.

Umm Qasr, located 60 km (40 miles) south of Basra, receives grain, vegetable oil and sugar shipments that feed a country largely dependent on imported food.
