Timeline - Lebanese-Israeli violence since 2000

(Reuters) - Violence erupted along the Israel-Lebanon on Tuesday, ending four years of tense calm.

Here is a timeline of violence between the two countries since Israel left Lebanon in 2000.

May 24, 2000 - Israel ends 22-year occupation of south Lebanon. Israel had controlled parts of south Lebanon with the help of militia proxies since its 1978 “Litani operation” invasion. Its occupation zone, about 15 km (nine miles) deep, was carved out in 1985 after it pulled back from a line further north, held since a 1982 invasion that reached Beirut.

July 2006 - Israel strikes Beirut airport and blockades Lebanese ports after Hezbollah fighters seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.

— Some 4,000 rockets fired by Hezbollah guerrillas strike Israeli targets as a response.

— At least 1,200 people in Lebanon and 158 Israelis are killed in the 34 days of fighting that erupted after Hezbollah captured the two Israelis.

August 14 - Fighting in south Lebanon stops after United Nations brokers cease-fire.

October 1 - Israel completes withdrawal from Lebanon, except for northern part of divided village of Ghajar. Lebanese army and UNIFIL take control of south under cease-fire deal.

January 8, 2009 - At least three rockets fired from Lebanon explode in northern Israel, wounding two people. The attack was seen as linked to Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip. The attack provokes a salvo of artillery shells into south Lebanon from Israel in response.

February 2009 - At least six artillery shells are fired from Israel and land in southern Lebanon. They targeted an area where two rockets were fired towards Israel, one of which struck northern Israel. December 2009 - Lebanon’s army says it fired anti-aircraft rounds at four Israeli warplanes which flew at low altitude over south Lebanon.

— U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanon say Israeli flights over the country violate Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.

August 2010 - Three Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and an Israeli officer are killed after Israeli and Lebanese armies clash.
