ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Australian Daniel Ricciardo is being lined up for a race seat with Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso next season, the Formula One team’s principal Franz Tost said on Friday.
“He should learn the team, all the race tracks, to work together with the engineers, get a little bit of knowledge about the press work, about the marketing and this should be the preparation for him to race for Toro Rosso in 2012,” he told reporters.
Asked whether there were any plans for the highly-rated reserve driver, who takes part in the first practice session on race Fridays, to compete for the team before then, Tost replied: “No, currently not.”
Toro Rosso’s race drivers are Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemi and Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari.
Red Bull’s world champion Sebastian Vettel raced for Toro Rosso in 2007 and 2008, taking his first race win with them at Monza in 2008.
Vettel’s team mate at the world champions is Australian Mark Webber whose contract expires at the end of this year.
Ricciardo, 21, was British Formula Three champion in 2009.
