Niger army stopped attackers at border, gun battle underway

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Niger army reinforcements stopped the perpetrators of a deadly hit-and-run attack on Saturday as they tried to cross back into Mali at the border, triggering a fierce gun battle, a security source in the area said.

Gunmen mounted on pick-up trucks and motorcycles had earlier killed 12 gendarmes and wounded several in an attack on their base in western Niger, near the Mali border.
