Johnson, on loan from Chelsea, tried to smuggle the bathroom accessories out of a B & Q home improvement store with the help of Millwall striker Ben May on Wednesday, media said.

A police spokesman said: “Kent Police arrested two 22-year-old men on Wednesday on suspicion of theft in Dartford. Both men have been issued with 80 pound fixed penalty notices”.

Johnson, who has played five times for England, was Chelsea’s first signing following the club’s takeover by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in July, 2003. He arrived from West Ham United for six million pounds.
