Ventura offers resignation at Chievo after four games

MILAN (Reuters) - Chievo coach Gian Piero Ventura offered his resignation on Sunday immediately after his side had picked up their first point in their four games under his leadership, a club director said.

The Flying Donkeys, who are bottom of the Serie A table and have yet to win a league match this season, drew 2-2 at home to Bologna following defeats in the former Italy coach’s first three games in charge.

Media reports said that Ventura told players of his decision immediately after the final whistle, however, the club’s sporting director Giancarlo Romairone suggested they hoped to persuade him to stay on.

“It’s always said that it’s best not to talk in the heat of the moment,” Romairone said in a television interview.

“It’s only right that Ventura talks to the president when he is calmer to understand the reasons for this decision which is a little bit awkward.

“I asked him to count to 10,” he added. “The club has done everything to keep him happy... we will take a few hours to decide with cool heads what to do.

“We have not changed our minds on Ventura, we still feel the same as a month ago when we hired him.”

Ventura was appointed last month, his first coaching job since his Italy side failed to qualify for the World Cup last November.

Federico Santander opened the scoring for Bologna in the fifth minute before Riccardo Meggiorini levelled with a penalty and Joel Obi gave Chievo a halftime 2-1 lead. Riccardo Orsolini headed Bologna level in the 56th minute.

Chievo had three points deducted for accounting irregularities and the result took them back up to zero points from 12 games, seven adrift at the bottom. Bologna are 16th with 10 points, one clear of the relegation zone.
