(Reuters) - A look at the records of Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva and Japan’s Naomi Osaka before their first-round match at Wimbledon on Monday (prefix number denotes seeding):
WTA Ranking: 39 (Highest ranking: 27)
Grand Slam titles: 0
2018 Wimbledon performance: Second round
Best Wimbledon performance: Second round (2015, 2016, 2018)
Putintseva, who holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over former world number one Osaka, beat the Japanese in straight sets at the Birmingham Classic last month.
The Kazakh, who won her maiden WTA title at Nuremberg in May, is ranked 39th in the world but has a reputation as a giant-killer, having beaten players in the world’s top 10 seven times in her career.
WTA Ranking: 2 (Highest ranking: 1)
Grand Slam titles: 2 (U.S. Open 2018, Australian Open 2019)
2018 Wimbledon performance: Third round
Best Wimbledon performance: Third round (2017, 2018)
Osaka, who was recently replaced by Australia’s Ash Barty at the top of the world rankings, has said she is relieved to head into Wimbledon without the extra pressure that comes with being world number one.
The two-times Grand Slam winner is at her best on hard courts and has never gone past the third round at the All England Club, while her form has dipped since she parted company with coach Sascha Bajin in February.
2019 Putintseva d Osaka 6-2 6-3 (Birmingham, grass)
2018 Putintseva d Osaka 6-3 6-3 (Hobart, hard)
